As major manufacturers focus on large, multi-megawatt wind turbines, a new market has emerged for refurbishing older, smaller models whose warranties have expired.

This process gives aging turbines a new life, making them available to small-scale operators, often in developing markets or for agricultural use. The core of the refurbishment is a three-part electrical retrofit:

Installing a full power converter to enable efficient, variable-speed operation and meet modern grid codes.

  • Modifying the generator to work with the new electronics without needing structural recertification.

  • Adjusting the power rating to align with specific financial incentives, like feed-in tariffs.

The primary benefits are cost and speed. A refurbished turbine costs about half the price of a new one and can be delivered in just a few months, providing an affordable and accessible source of clean energy. Read the full article.
