As major manufacturers focus on large, multi-megawatt wind turbines, a new market has emerged for refurbishing older, smaller models whose warranties have expired.
This process gives aging turbines a new life, making them available to small-scale operators, often in developing markets or for agricultural use. The core of the refurbishment is a three-part electrical retrofit:
Installing a full power converter to enable efficient, variable-speed operation and meet modern grid codes.
Modifying the generator to work with the new electronics without needing structural recertification.
Adjusting the power rating to align with specific financial incentives, like feed-in tariffs.
The primary benefits are cost and speed. A refurbished turbine costs about half the price of a new one and can be delivered in just a few months, providing an affordable and accessible source of clean energy. Read the full article.
